Every Sunday morning, the Tan Hoa village market is full of life. For many years, sellers there wrapped everything in thin plastic bags, and by noon the ground was covered with rubbish. Last year, a group of students from the local high school, led by their English teacher Ms Lan, decided to change this habit. First, they interviewed fifty sellers and found that most of them used more than two hundred bags a day, mainly because customers expected them. Then the students made cloth bags from old clothes and sold them at a low price. They also put up posters that read: 'Bring your own bag, save the Earth.' At first, many elderly sellers were doubtful because they thought cloth bags were inconvenient. However, after the students showed that the bags were strong and could be washed, their attitudes changed. Six months later, the use of plastic bags in the market had dropped by about sixty per cent. Some sellers now give small discounts to customers who carry their own bags. The students hope other markets in the district will follow their example, although they admit that changing habits takes patience.
